Metzenbaum scissors are used for blunt and sharp dissection of delicate tissue planes rather than for cutting tough material. The long shank-to-blade ratio is the defining feature: it gives reach into a deep field while keeping the cutting action light and controlled. Using them on suture or heavy fascia is what ruins them, which is why a Mayo scissor is kept alongside on the same tray.
Curved blades are the more commonly ordered pattern because they follow tissue contours and improve visibility past the tip. Longer shanks (18–23 cm) are specified for deep pelvic and thoracic work.

Material, Finish and Quality Control
We forge Metzenbaum scissors from AISI 420 martensitic stainless. The slender blades are checked for alignment along their full length, since a fine blade shows any misalignment immediately as a failure to shear. Each batch passes Rockwell hardness testing, dimensional checks on blade alignment and tip meeting, and visual inspection under our ISO 13485 system before passivation and final finishing.
