Notching encodes an animal’s identity in a pattern of cuts read against a standard numbering scheme, and unlike a tag it cannot be lost. The instrument must cut a clean-edged notch in one action — a ragged cut heals poorly, distorts the notch shape and can make the number unreadable later, which defeats the entire purpose.
V-notchers cut a wedge from the ear margin; round punches take a hole from the ear body. Both must shear cartilage cleanly, and the cutting edge works against an anvil face that must stay true.

Each batch passes Rockwell hardness testing, dimensional checks on edge-to-anvil contact, and visual inspection under our ISO 13485 system before passivation and final finishing. Mirror and satin finishes are both available — satin is usually specified where glare under operating lights is a concern.
