The iris is delicate and prolapses easily through a surgical wound. A spatula sweeps it back into position, frees adhesions, and protects it during instrument passage — all with a smooth flat blade that pushes tissue without catching or tearing it. It is also used to help position an intraocular lens and to sweep the anterior chamber.
The blade must be genuinely smooth on every surface and edge, since its entire function is to move delicate tissue without engaging it. Any burr or sharp transition converts a repositioning instrument into a cutting one.
