Tonsil Holding Forceps — Pattern and Clinical Use
The tonsil must be drawn medially and held under tension while it is dissected from its bed — that tension is what defines the plane the surgeon follows. These forceps grip the tonsil securely enough to maintain traction throughout, without shredding tissue that is friable and vascular. The ratchet holds the traction so the assistant is not fighting the grip.
Jaw design has to balance grip against tissue damage: too aggressive and the tonsil tears free mid-dissection, too gentle and it slips. Fenestrated and cross-serrated patterns are the common compromises.
