Cryer Elevators — Pattern and Clinical Use
The Cryer is the instrument reached for when a root has fractured and part of it remains in the socket. Its triangular blade is inserted into the empty socket of an adjacent root and rotated, using the interseptal bone as a fulcrum to lever the retained fragment out. Because the blade approaches from one side only, the pattern is always supplied as a mirrored left and right pair.
The point of the triangular blade must be sharp enough to engage the root fragment and strong enough to take rotational load without deforming. That combination of a fine engaging point on a load-bearing blade is what makes the pattern demanding to manufacture.

Material, Finish and Quality Control
We forge Cryer elevators from AISI 420 martensitic stainless. The blade point is checked for sharpness and the blade tested under rotational load, since it must engage a fragment and lever against bone without deforming. Each batch passes Rockwell hardness testing, dimensional checks on point sharpness under rotational load, and visual inspection under our ISO 13485 system before passivation and final finishing. Mirror and satin finishes are both available — satin is usually specified where glare under operating lights is a concern.
