Mayo scissors are the workhorse cutting instrument of the general tray. The straight pattern is used mainly for cutting suture and for work at the surface, while the curved pattern is used to cut heavy tissue and fascia at depth, where the curve lets the surgeon see past the blade tip. The blades are noticeably thicker than a dissecting scissor because they are built to cut tough structures without flexing.

Because straight Mayos are so often used on suture, many buyers order them with tungsten-carbide inserts — suture cutting is what dulls a plain stainless blade fastest. Curved Mayos are more often specified plain, since they are used on tissue rather than braided material.
