Ear Specula — Pattern and Clinical Use
The ear canal is curved, so a speculum is needed to straighten and open it for a clear view of the drum. Reusable metal specula are supplied in graduated diameters, and choosing the largest that fits comfortably gives the widest field of view and the best light transmission. They are also used to pass instruments for wax removal and foreign-body extraction under direct vision.
The distal rim must be rolled and polished, because the bony canal wall is thin-skinned and exquisitely sensitive — a sharp rim causes immediate pain and can lacerate the canal. Reusable stainless specula are preferred over disposables where instrumentation is planned.

Material, Finish and Quality Control
We forge ear specula from 316L austenitic stainless. The distal rim is rolled, polished and inspected, because the bony canal skin is thin and a sharp rim lacerates it immediately. Each batch passes Rockwell hardness testing, dimensional checks on distal rim rolling and polish, and visual inspection under our ISO 13485 system before passivation and final finishing. Mirror and satin finishes are both available — satin is usually specified where glare under operating lights is a concern.
