Coupland Elevators — Pattern and Clinical Use
The Coupland is the general workhorse elevator. Its straight concave blade is driven into the periodontal space between tooth and bone and rotated, wedging the tooth loose. The three graduated widths are used in sequence: the narrow No. 1 to gain initial purchase, then progressively wider blades as the space opens and the tooth mobilises.
Because the instrument is driven and rotated with real force, the blade-to-shank junction and the handle-to-shank fit are load-bearing. Coupland elevators are also among the most commonly used dental instruments, so they see heavy reprocessing cycles.

Material, Finish and Quality Control
We forge Coupland elevators from AISI 420 martensitic stainless. The blade-to-shank junction is load-tested under rotation, because the instrument is driven and turned with substantial force in normal use. Each batch passes Rockwell hardness testing, dimensional checks on shank junction under rotational load, and visual inspection under our ISO 13485 system before passivation and final finishing. Mirror and satin finishes are both available — satin is usually specified where glare under operating lights is a concern.
