
Dental Elevators — Pattern and Clinical Use
An elevator works as a lever against the alveolar bone to break down the periodontal ligament and mobilise the tooth. Applied correctly it does most of the work of an extraction, with forceps used only to deliver the loosened tooth. Blade shape determines the application: straight elevators for general luxation, and paired left/right patterns for approaching roots from either side.
Elevators generate high leverage forces, so the blade-to-shank junction is the load-critical point. A weld or joint that flexes under load makes the instrument unusable and potentially dangerous.

Material, Finish and Quality Control
We forge dental elevators from AISI 420 martensitic stainless. The blade-to-shank junction is load-tested, because elevators generate high leverage and a joint that flexes under load is a safety problem rather than a quality one. Each batch passes Rockwell hardness testing, dimensional checks on blade-to-shank junction under leverage, and visual inspection under our ISO 13485 system before passivation and final finishing. Mirror and satin finishes are both available — satin is usually specified where glare under operating lights is a concern.
Who Sources Dental Elevators From Surgical Star
Elevators sell as graduated sets to dental and oral-surgery distributors and are usually ordered alongside extraction forceps. Left/right pairs must be stocked together.

What is the difference between an elevator and a luxator?
An elevator levers against bone to mobilise the tooth. A luxator has a thinner, sharper blade designed to be pushed into the periodontal ligament space to sever it, cutting rather than levering.
Why are Cryer elevators supplied in left and right?
Their triangular blade approaches the root from one side, so a mirrored pair is needed to work on both sides of the arch. They are always stocked as pairs.
Which straight elevator sizes should we carry?
Coupland 1, 2 and 3 as a graduated set is the standard starting range, allowing progressively wider luxation as the tooth mobilises.
