Bone Gouges — Pattern and Clinical Use
Where an osteotome makes a flat cut, a gouge removes a curved channel. The semicircular blade cuts a trough through cancellous bone, which is how bone graft is harvested from the iliac crest and how curved surfaces are shaped. The curvature of the blade determines the profile of the trough, so gouges are supplied in a range of radii as well as widths.
The cutting edge runs around a curve, which makes it harder to sharpen and to keep uniform than a straight blade — edge consistency around the full arc is the manufacturing challenge on this pattern.

Material, Finish and Quality Control
We forge bone gouges from AISI 420 martensitic stainless. Edge sharpness is verified around the full arc of the curve, which is harder to hold uniform than on a straight blade. Each batch passes Rockwell hardness testing, dimensional checks on edge consistency around the arc, and visual inspection under our ISO 13485 system before passivation and final finishing. Mirror and satin finishes are both available — satin is usually specified where glare under operating lights is a concern.
