The speculum opens the nasal vestibule so the clinician can see and work inside the nose. Blade length determines how far up the cavity the view extends: short blades suit anterior rhinoscopy and epistaxis management, while longer Killian blades reach the middle meatus for septal surgery. The blades spread vertically rather than horizontally, following the natural shape of the nostril.
Blade edges and tips must be fully rounded and polished, because the nasal mucosa bleeds readily and any edge traumatises it. Satin finish is usually preferred so the blades do not flare under a headlight.
