The Weitlaner is the general-purpose self-retaining retractor. Its two arms spread apart and lock on a ratchet, holding a wound open without an assistant, which makes it the standard choice for smaller incisions in orthopedic, plastic, veterinary and general procedures. Prongs come sharp for firm anchorage in dense tissue or blunt where sharp points would risk injury to underlying structures.
Prong count is quoted as 2×3, 3×4 or 4×5. More prongs distribute the retraction load over a wider tissue area, which matters when holding open tissue that would tear under point loading.
