Bone Files & Rasps — Pattern and Clinical Use
After bone is cut with a saw, osteotome or rongeur, the surface is left with sharp edges and irregularities that would irritate soft tissue or interfere with prosthesis seating. Files smooth those surfaces to a finished contour. Coarse rasps remove bulk quickly; fine files finish the surface. Most patterns are double-ended with two cuts or profiles.
Serration cut and direction determine how the file works. Cut direction is oriented so the instrument cuts on the stroke away from soft tissue, and uniform tooth height is what prevents gouging.

Material, Finish and Quality Control
We forge bone files & rasps from AISI 420 martensitic stainless. Serration cut is checked for uniform tooth height and direction, since uneven teeth gouge rather than smooth. Each batch passes Rockwell hardness testing, dimensional checks on tooth height uniformity, and visual inspection under our ISO 13485 system before passivation and final finishing. Mirror and satin finishes are both available — satin is usually specified where glare under operating lights is a concern.
Who Sources Bone Files & Rasps From Surgical Star
Bone files sell to orthopedic and maxillofacial distributors as double-ended sets and are standard in arthroplasty, amputation and bone-shaping trays.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why smooth bone after cutting?
A cut surface has sharp edges and irregularities that irritate soft tissue and can interfere with prosthesis seating. Filing produces a finished contour.
Coarse or fine cut?
Both. Coarse rasps remove bulk quickly, fine files finish the surface. Double-ended instruments carrying both are the practical option.
What profile should we stock?
Flat profiles for flat surfaces and half-round for concave and curved bone. Most sets include both.
Can you manufacture these under our own brand?
Yes — full OEM and private label. We laser-mark your logo and catalog numbers, pack in your branded boxes, and work from your drawings, tech pack or a reference sample, with a pre-production sample approved before any bulk run.
