Nippers remove hoof wall in controlled bites around the perimeter of the foot. The jaws must shear dense keratin cleanly rather than crushing it, because a crushed wall edge splits and chips. Long handles provide the leverage needed, and jaw width determines how much wall is taken per bite — wider jaws work faster, narrower jaws give more control around the toe and quarters.
