Cervical dilation is done in ascending steps, and Hegar dilators are the standard instrument for it. Each double-ended rod carries two adjacent sizes, and the operator passes successively larger diameters until the canal admits the instrument required for the procedure. Progressive dilation matters because jumping sizes tears the cervix rather than stretching it.
Sizes run in half-millimetre or millimetre steps, typically 1 mm to 26 mm across a full set. Surface polish is critical — the dilator passes through a canal it is actively stretching, and any roughness lacerates rather than dilates.

Material, Finish and Quality Control
We forge Hegar dilators from 316L austenitic stainless. Diameters are gauged against reference sizes and surfaces polished, since progressive dilation depends on each step being exactly the stated diameter. Each batch passes Rockwell hardness testing, dimensional checks on diameter accuracy and surface polish, and visual inspection under our ISO 13485 system before passivation and final finishing. Mirror and satin finishes are both available — satin is usually specified where glare under operating lights is a concern.
