Hoof Testers — Pattern and Clinical Use
The hoof tester is a diagnostic instrument, not a cutting one. Its two arms are squeezed to apply pressure across specific points of the sole, frog and wall, and the animal’s withdrawal response localises pain — an abscess, a bruise, or laminitic pain. Because the finding depends on where pressure is applied, tip placement precision and consistent force transmission are what make the instrument diagnostic.
Arm spring rate matters: too stiff and the operator cannot modulate pressure finely, too soft and adequate pressure cannot be reached on a large hoof. Patterns are sized by species and hoof dimension.

Material, Finish and Quality Control
We forge hoof testers from AISI 420 martensitic stainless. Arm spring rate is checked against a target so pressure can be modulated finely and reproduced from one examination to the next. Each batch passes Rockwell hardness testing, dimensional checks on arm spring rate, and visual inspection under our ISO 13485 system before passivation and final finishing. Mirror and satin finishes are both available — satin is usually specified where glare under operating lights is a concern.
