Periotomes — Pattern and Clinical Use
The periotome is the atraumatic-extraction instrument. Its blade is thinner than any elevator — often under half a millimetre — and is tapped or pressed apically into the periodontal ligament space, cutting the fibres circumferentially rather than levering the tooth against bone. That preserves the buccal plate, which is exactly what matters when an implant is planned in the site.
Blade thinness is the whole point and also the manufacturing difficulty: a blade this thin must still resist buckling when pressed apically. Some patterns are designed to be tapped with a mallet, which requires an impact-rated handle.

Material, Finish and Quality Control
We forge periotomes from AISI 420 martensitic stainless. Blades are checked for straightness and resistance to buckling under apical pressure, which is the specific challenge of a sub-millimetre blade. Each batch passes Rockwell hardness testing, dimensional checks on thin-blade buckling resistance, and visual inspection under our ISO 13485 system before passivation and final finishing. Mirror and satin finishes are both available — satin is usually specified where glare under operating lights is a concern.

How does a periotome differ from a luxator?
Both sever the periodontal ligament, but a periotome has an even thinner blade and is often tapped apically with a mallet. Luxators are pressed and rocked by hand.
Why do implant dentists use periotomes?
Because cutting the ligament preserves the buccal plate rather than expanding or fracturing it, which protects the bone volume an implant will need.
Can periotomes be mallet-driven?
Some patterns are designed for it and use an impact-rated handle. Standard hand patterns should not be struck.
