Dental Rongeurs — Pattern and Clinical Use
After an extraction the alveolar ridge is often left with sharp or irregular bone that would traumatise the overlying tissue or interfere with a denture. The rongeur bites away that bone in controlled increments. Its sharpened cupped jaws shear rather than crush, and the internal spring reopens the jaws after each bite so the instrument can be worked one-handed.
Blade patterns are described by cutting direction: end-cutting for working into a socket, side-cutting for trimming a ridge laterally, and end-and-side cutting for both. The spring must return the jaws reliably through thousands of cycles.
