Allis forceps grip tissue that is going to be removed or retracted rather than preserved — the toothed jaw holds firmly but is traumatic, so it is used on specimens, fascia and tissue being excised rather than on structures that must stay intact. The tooth row runs across the jaw width, spreading grip across the tissue edge instead of pinching a single point.
Tooth counts are quoted as 4×5, 5×6 or 6×7 depending on jaw width. The heavier counts are used in general and gynecological surgery; finer counts suit more delicate applications.
