Sponge Holding Forceps — Pattern and Clinical Use
The ring jaw grips a folded swab securely so it can be used to prep skin, swab a cavity or retract with a sponge at depth. The ratchet keeps the swab clamped without continuous hand pressure, and the long shank keeps the surgeon’s hand out of the field. They are also used to grasp tissue in some procedures, though that is secondary to their main role.
Ring alignment is the key quality point: if the two ring jaws are even slightly out of register the swab works loose in use, which is both an inconvenience and a retained-item risk.
