Mayo-Hegar Needle Holders — Pattern and Clinical Use
The Mayo-Hegar is the default needle holder on most trays. Ring handles and a ratcheted box lock let the surgeon lock a needle at a chosen angle and drive it through tissue with control, then release cleanly. Jaws are relatively broad and cross-serrated, suited to the medium and large curved needles used in general closure. Lengths typically run 14–20 cm, with longer patterns for deep fields.
The Mayo-Hegar differs from the closely related Olsen-Hegar in one respect: the Olsen-Hegar adds a suture-cutting scissor blade behind the jaw, letting the operator suture and cut with one instrument. Buyers should carry both as distinct catalog numbers.

The Olsen-Hegar has a suture-cutting scissor blade built in behind the jaw, so it can suture and cut with one instrument. The Mayo-Hegar grips only, which some surgeons prefer because there is no risk of cutting the suture accidentally.
