Retractors — Pattern and Clinical Use
Retraction is either held by an assistant or held by the instrument itself. Hand-held patterns such as the Langenbeck, Army-Navy, Deaver and Richardson give an assistant fine control over how much tension is applied and where. Self-retaining patterns such as the Weitlaner, Gelpi, Beckman and Balfour lock open on a ratchet or rack and hold the field without a pair of hands, which is what makes single-operator and small-team surgery practical.
Blade width, depth and curvature are the specification that matters, because a retractor that is too shallow slips out of the wound and one that is too wide obstructs the field. Most patterns are therefore supplied in graduated blade sizes rather than a single size.

Material, Finish and Quality Control
We forge retractors from 316L austenitic stainless. Blade edges are radiused and polished so the retractor spreads load across tissue instead of concentrating it, and self-retaining ratchets are cycled to confirm they hold under spread. Each batch passes Rockwell hardness testing, dimensional checks on blade edge radius and ratchet hold, and visual inspection under our ISO 13485 system before passivation and final finishing. Mirror and satin finishes are both available — satin is usually specified where glare under operating lights is a concern.

Why is 316L used for retractors?
Retractors do not need a hardened cutting edge, so corrosion resistance through repeated autoclaving matters more than hardness. 316L austenitic stainless resists that far better than AISI 420.
