The Army-Navy is the general-purpose hand-held retractor of minor and intermediate surgery. Being double-ended, one instrument offers two blade depths, so the assistant can flip it rather than swap instruments as the dissection deepens. The blades are flat with a turned lip, suited to superficial and mid-depth wound edges rather than deep abdominal work.
Because both ends are used, both must be finished to the same standard — a common shortcut on cheap instruments is to finish the more visible end well and the second end poorly.
