Trocars — Pattern and Clinical Use
A trocar and cannula work as a pair: the sharp trocar makes the puncture, then it is withdrawn and the cannula stays behind as a channel for drainage or instrument access. They are used to drain fluid collections, to place drains and, in reusable form, to establish access ports. Point geometry — three-sided pyramidal or conical — determines how cleanly the instrument passes through the wall.
Reusable trocars must maintain point sharpness through repeated reprocessing, and the trocar-to-cannula fit must remain precise. A trocar that has become loose in its cannula after repeated cycles no longer punctures cleanly.

Material, Finish and Quality Control
We forge trocars from AISI 420 martensitic stainless. Point geometry is checked for symmetry and the trocar-to-cannula fit is gauged, since a loose fit after repeated cycles stops the instrument puncturing cleanly. Each batch passes Rockwell hardness testing, dimensional checks on point symmetry and cannula fit, and visual inspection under our ISO 13485 system before passivation and final finishing. Mirror and satin finishes are both available — satin is usually specified where glare under operating lights is a concern.
