Foerster Sponge Forceps — Pattern and Clinical Use
The Foerster is the reference design for sponge holding: two serrated rings that clamp a folded swab securely for skin preparation, swabbing at depth and cavity work. The long shank keeps the hand clear of the sterile field, and the ratchet holds the swab without continuous grip. Straight and curved patterns are both standard, typically 18–25 cm.
Foerster forceps are also widely used outside the operating theatre — in obstetrics for swabbing and in some settings as a general long-reach grasper — which makes them a broader-selling line than their surgical classification suggests.
