Stitch Scissors — Pattern and Clinical Use
Removing a suture cleanly means getting a blade under the strand without pulling the knot back through the wound. The hooked lower blade of a stitch scissor does exactly that — it slides beneath the suture, catches it in the notch, and the upper blade cuts it in place. Using ordinary scissors for the job is awkward and drags the suture, which is uncomfortable and can disturb healing tissue.
The hook notch geometry is the entire instrument. If the notch is too shallow the suture escapes; too deep and it is hard to position under a tight stitch. Spencer and Littauer are the two classic named patterns.

Material, Finish and Quality Control
We forge stitch scissors from AISI 420 martensitic stainless. Hook notch depth and profile are gauged, because a shallow notch lets the suture escape and an over-deep one will not seat under a tight stitch. Each batch passes Rockwell hardness testing, dimensional checks on hook notch depth and profile, and visual inspection under our ISO 13485 system before passivation and final finishing. Mirror and satin finishes are both available — satin is usually specified where glare under operating lights is a concern.

Why not use ordinary scissors to remove sutures?
