The defining feature is the tip: very fine, accurately meeting points that can grasp something small enough to be barely visible. They are used in emergency departments, minor-injury units, general practice and first-aid settings for foreign-body removal, and also in laboratory work where a fine grip is needed. Patterns are supplied with straight or angled tips depending on approach.
Because the value of the instrument is entirely in the tip, tip meeting under magnification is the only inspection that really matters. A splinter forceps whose points cross or gap will not do the one job it exists for.

Mirror and satin finishes are both available — satin is usually specified where glare under operating lights is a concern.
