Amalgam Carriers — Pattern and Clinical Use
The carrier picks up a measured increment of amalgam or other restorative material in its barrel and delivers it into the cavity by pushing the plunger. That controlled delivery matters because material must be placed in increments and condensed as it goes, rather than dropped into the preparation. Double-ended carriers with two barrel diameters let the operator switch increment size without changing instrument.
The plunger must move freely but without play, and the barrel interior must be smooth enough that set material does not adhere. A carrier that clogs is the single most common complaint about this instrument.

Material, Finish and Quality Control
We forge amalgam carriers from 316L austenitic stainless. Plunger action is cycled and the barrel bore inspected for smoothness, because material adhering in the barrel is the standard failure complaint on this instrument. Each batch passes Rockwell hardness testing, dimensional checks on plunger action and barrel bore finish, and visual inspection under our ISO 13485 system before passivation and final finishing. Mirror and satin finishes are both available — satin is usually specified where glare under operating lights is a concern.

Why do amalgam carriers clog?
Set material adheres inside the barrel if the bore is rough or the plunger has play. We inspect bore finish and cycle the plunger for this reason, and PTFE-lined versions resist adhesion further.
Single or double-ended?
Double-ended carriers with two barrel diameters are more versatile because the operator can change increment size without swapping instruments.
Can they be used for materials other than amalgam?
