Burdizzo Castrators — Pattern and Clinical Use
The Burdizzo works without breaking the skin. Its heavy jaws are closed across the neck of the scrotum, crushing the spermatic cord and its blood supply while leaving the skin intact, so there is no open wound and no fly-strike or infection risk. Because nothing is removed, correct jaw placement and full closure are the entire basis of whether the procedure succeeds.
Jaw parallelism under full closure is critical: jaws that meet at the tip first will crush incompletely at the base, leaving cord intact and the procedure ineffective. Larger patterns carry compound leverage to generate the required force.

We forge Burdizzo castrators from AISI 420 martensitic stainless. Jaws are checked for parallel meeting under full closure, because tip-first closure leaves cord uncrushed at the base and the procedure fails. Each batch passes Rockwell hardness testing, dimensional checks on jaw parallelism at full closure, and visual inspection under our ISO 13485 system before passivation and final finishing. Mirror and satin finishes are both available — satin is usually specified where glare under operating lights is a concern.
