Dehorners — Pattern and Clinical Use
Method depends on age. Young calves are disbudded with a scoop or tube dehorner that removes the horn bud and surrounding germinal tissue in one cut, which prevents regrowth. Older animals with established horn require guillotine or heavy-lever dehorners that shear through the horn base. Getting the germinal tissue is what determines whether the horn regrows, so cutting diameter matters as much as cutting force.
Because dehorning is a welfare-sensitive procedure, a clean single cut is far preferable to repeated attempts. Blade sharpness and mechanism strength are therefore welfare characteristics rather than convenience features.

We forge dehorners from AISI 420 martensitic stainless. Cutting edges are honed and the mechanism proof-loaded so the horn is removed in a single clean cut rather than requiring repeated attempts. Each batch passes Rockwell hardness testing, dimensional checks on edge keenness and single-cut capability, and visual inspection under our ISO 13485 system before passivation and final finishing. Mirror and satin finishes are both available — satin is usually specified where glare under operating lights is a concern.

What is the difference between disbudding and dehorning?
Disbudding removes the horn bud in a young animal before the horn attaches to the skull. Dehorning removes established horn from an older animal and needs a much heavier instrument.
Why does the germinal ring matter?
If the germinal tissue around the bud is not removed, the horn regrows. Cutting diameter must be sufficient to take it in one pass.
Which pattern for goats?
Scaled kid and goat patterns, which are smaller than calf instruments because horn buds develop earlier and closer to the skull.
