Spay Hooks — Pattern and Clinical Use
In a small-incision spay the surgeon cannot see the uterine horn directly. The spay hook is passed through the incision along the abdominal wall and swept to engage the horn or broad ligament, then withdrawn to bring it into the incision. That converts a procedure needing a long incision into one needing a short one, which is the entire clinical argument for the instrument.
The hook tip must be smooth and rounded — it is being drawn blindly across viscera, so any edge or burr risks laceration of bowel or bladder. Tip radius is the safety-critical dimension.
