Calving Jacks — Pattern and Clinical Use
In an assisted calving, traction must be applied steadily, in the right direction and in time with the cow’s contractions. The jack braces against the cow’s pelvis and applies ratcheted pull through calving chains, letting one operator deliver a calf that manual traction could not. Critically, it also lets force be released instantly if the calf is malpositioned, which manual pulling by several people does not.
This is a high-force device used on a live animal, so the ratchet must hold reliably and release cleanly under load. Excessive or misdirected force causes injury to cow and calf, which is why controlled release matters as much as pulling power.
