A calving chain looped around a calf’s limb needs something to pull on. The chain handle hooks into any link, which lets the operator adjust the effective chain length instantly and pull with both hands or attach to a calving jack. Being able to move the grip point link by link is what allows traction to be redirected as the calf’s position changes.
The hook must engage a chain link positively and not disengage under load or when the angle of pull changes. That combination — easy to move deliberately, impossible to slip accidentally — is the whole design problem.
