Killian Nasal Specula — Pattern and Clinical Use
The Killian reaches where shorter specula cannot. Its long blades pass beyond the nasal vestibule to expose the septum and middle meatus, which is why it is the standard speculum for septoplasty and submucous resection. A screw or thumb lock holds the blades at a set separation so the exposure stays constant while the surgeon works with both hands.
Blade length is the ordering variable, commonly 50 mm to 90 mm. Because the blades work deep against the septal mucosa, the inner faces must be smooth and the tips rounded so the mucoperichondrial flap is not torn during exposure.
