Thudichum Specula — Pattern and Clinical Use
The Thudichum is the hands-free nasal speculum. It is squeezed, inserted and released so its own spring holds the nostril open, which frees both of the clinician’s hands for instrumentation — a real advantage during nasal packing or foreign-body removal. Because it is a single sprung piece with no hinge, it is also the simplest nasal speculum to clean and the least likely to fail mechanically.
The whole instrument depends on spring temper. Too soft and it will not hold the nostril open; too hard and it dilates uncomfortably. Sizes are numbered by blade width, and most ENT clinics keep a graduated set.
