Jobson-Horne Probes — Pattern and Clinical Use
This is the everyday ENT clinic instrument. The ring curette end scrapes wax and debris from the ear canal under direct vision, while the serrated end holds a wisp of cotton wool for mopping discharge or applying medication. Having both functions on one instrument is why it appears in virtually every ENT and general-practice ear tray.
The ring must have a smooth outer edge and a defined inner cutting edge — sharp enough to lift wax from the canal wall, smooth enough not to abrade the skin. That asymmetry is the manufacturing detail that separates a good probe from a poor one.

Material, Finish and Quality Control
We forge Jobson-Horne probes from 316L austenitic stainless. The ring is finished with a smooth outer edge and a defined inner edge, so it lifts wax without abrading the canal skin. Each batch passes Rockwell hardness testing, dimensional checks on ring inner and outer edge finish, and visual inspection under our ISO 13485 system before passivation and final finishing. Mirror and satin finishes are both available — satin is usually specified where glare under operating lights is a concern.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a Jobson-Horne probe used for?
Wax and debris removal with the ring curette end, and mopping or medication application with the cotton-wool carrier end.
Why does the ring have different inner and outer edges?
The inner edge must be defined enough to lift wax from the canal wall, while the outer edge stays smooth so it does not abrade the canal skin.
