Capsulorhexis Forceps — Pattern and Clinical Use
Capsulorhexis creates the circular opening in the lens capsule through which the cataract is removed, and the continuity of that tear determines whether the capsular bag remains intact for the intraocular lens. These forceps grip the capsular flap precisely and allow the surgeon to redirect the tear continuously. Utrata patterns are the classic design; coaxial and micro-incision patterns pass through smaller wounds.
Tip design is everything: it must grasp a capsular flap only microns thick without cutting it, and release cleanly for repeated regripping. Cystotome-tipped versions can both puncture the capsule and grasp the flap.
