Barraquer Specula — Pattern and Clinical Use
The Barraquer is the standard wire speculum for cataract and anterior-segment surgery. Formed from a single piece of sprung wire, it holds the lids by its own spring tension with almost nothing sitting in the operative field — which matters when the surgeon is working under a microscope through a 2 mm wound. Open-wire and temporal patterns clear the approach path entirely.
Spring temper is the whole mechanism, as with any single-piece sprung instrument: it must hold the lids reliably without exerting pressure on the globe, which would raise intraocular pressure during surgery.

Material, Finish and Quality Control
We forge Barraquer specula from 316L austenitic stainless. Spring temper is set and verified so the lids are held reliably without exerting pressure on the globe. Each batch passes Rockwell hardness testing, dimensional checks on spring temper without globe pressure, and visual inspection under our ISO 13485 system before passivation and final finishing. Mirror and satin finishes are both available — satin is usually specified where glare under operating lights is a concern.
