Wescott Scissors — Pattern and Clinical Use
The Wescott is the general dissecting scissor of ophthalmic surgery. Its spring handles allow one-handed cutting with fine control, and the blades are longer and less sharply pointed than a Vannas, making them suited to dissecting conjunctiva and tenon’s capsule rather than intraocular structures. Blunt-tipped versions are standard for blunt dissection under the conjunctiva.
Because these are used for both sharp cutting and blunt dissection, the spring must return the blades consistently through thousands of cycles while the tips stay aligned — spring fatigue is the usual failure mode rather than edge wear.

Material, Finish and Quality Control

Spring return is cycle-tested and tip alignment rechecked afterwards, since spring fatigue rather than edge wear is the usual failure mode. Each batch passes Rockwell hardness testing, dimensional checks on spring return over cycling, and visual inspection under our ISO 13485 system before passivation and final finishing. Mirror and satin finishes are both available — satin is usually specified where glare under operating lights is a concern.
