Lens Loops — Pattern and Clinical Use
In extracapsular and manual small-incision cataract surgery the nucleus is delivered whole rather than emulsified, and the lens loop is what scoops behind it and guides it out through the wound. The loop passes beneath the nucleus, and gentle traction combined with counter-pressure expresses it. The instrument is also used to retrieve dropped fragments.
Loop dimensions determine which nucleus sizes can be engaged, and the wire or blade must be smooth on all surfaces since it passes behind the lens against the posterior capsule — a snag there causes capsular rupture.

Material, Finish and Quality Control
We forge Lens Loops from 316L austenitic stainless. All loop surfaces are polished and inspected, because the instrument passes against the posterior capsule where any snag causes rupture. Each batch passes Rockwell hardness testing, dimensional checks on loop surface polish, and visual inspection under our ISO 13485 system before passivation and final finishing. Mirror and satin finishes are both available — satin is usually specified where glare under operating lights is a concern.
