Rib Spreaders / Retractors — Pattern and Clinical Use
A thoracotomy is held open by a rack-and-pinion frame with two arms that engage the ribs above and below the incision. Turning the crank spreads the arms progressively, and the mechanism holds the separation for the whole procedure. Blade depth and spread capacity are matched to the patient — paediatric frames are far smaller and spread less than adult patterns.
Spreading is done slowly and progressively because ribs fracture if forced. The rack must therefore hold at every position without slipping back, and the crank must give controlled incremental movement rather than sudden travel.

Material, Finish and Quality Control
We forge Rib Spreaders / retractors from 316L austenitic stainless. The rack is tested to hold at every position under load and the crank checked for controlled incremental travel. Each batch passes Rockwell hardness testing, dimensional checks on rack hold at every position, and visual inspection under our ISO 13485 system before passivation and final finishing. Mirror and satin finishes are both available — satin is usually specified where glare under operating lights is a concern.
