Finochietto Rib Retractors — Pattern and Clinical Use
The Finochietto is the reference rib spreader. Its two arms carry blades that hook over the ribs, and a geared crank drives one arm along a rack to spread the incision and hold it. Detachable blades let the same frame be fitted with different depths, so one retractor covers a range of chest wall thicknesses rather than requiring several frames.
The gear and rack take the full spreading load, so tooth engagement and rack hardness determine service life. A worn rack that slips under load is a genuine hazard in an open chest.

Material, Finish and Quality Control

Each batch passes Rockwell hardness testing, dimensional checks on rack engagement under full load, and visual inspection under our ISO 13485 system before passivation and final finishing. Mirror and satin finishes are both available — satin is usually specified where glare under operating lights is a concern.
