
Periosteal Elevators — Pattern and Clinical Use
Bone must be exposed by lifting the periosteum cleanly off the surface, ideally as an intact layer that can be repaired afterwards. The elevator’s blunt bevelled blade is worked between periosteum and bone and swept along the surface, separating without tearing. Blade width is matched to the bone: narrow Freer patterns for small bones, wide Key patterns for the shaft of a long bone.
The blade edge must be blunt but defined — sharp enough to find the plane, blunt enough not to cut through the periosteum or gouge the bone surface. That balance is the whole specification.

Material, Finish and Quality Control
We forge periosteal elevators from 316L austenitic stainless. The blade edge is ground to a defined blunt profile, sharp enough to find the plane but not to cut through the periosteum. Each batch passes Rockwell hardness testing, dimensional checks on blade edge profile — defined but blunt, and visual inspection under our ISO 13485 system before passivation and final finishing. Mirror and satin finishes are both available — satin is usually specified where glare under operating lights is a concern.
