Verbrugge Bone Holding Forceps — Pattern and Clinical Use
The asymmetric jaw is what defines the Verbrugge. The hooked jaw engages the far cortex of the bone while the flat jaw presses on the plate, clamping the two together so screws can be placed through the plate holes into stable bone. It is the standard plate-holding clamp in internal fixation, and is also used for general fragment holding.
Because one jaw hooks the far cortex, jaw depth must suit the bone diameter being fixed — a jaw too shallow will not engage, too deep and it is unwieldy. Sets therefore carry several sizes.
