Bone Tamps — Pattern and Clinical Use
Graft material packed into a defect must be compacted to fill it properly, and a tamp does that: the flat or shaped face is placed against the graft and struck with a mallet, driving the material home. The same instrument seats fragments and press-fit components. The face must transmit impact evenly so the graft compacts uniformly rather than being driven to one side.
Face profile is matched to the job — flat for general compaction, cupped or contoured for shaped surfaces, and specific profiles for particular implant systems. The shaft must be impact-rated since the instrument is struck repeatedly.
Bone Tamps Variants and Specifications
Standard bone tamp patterns.
| Variant | Specification / use |
|---|---|
| Flat face | General graft compaction |
| Cupped face | Contoured surfaces |
| Graduated diameters | Matched to defect size |
| Offset / angled shaft | Access around anatomy |
| Impact-rated shaft | Withstands repeated mallet blows |
| Calibrated shaft | Depth reference during impaction |
Material, Finish and Quality Control
We forge bone Tamps from 316L austenitic stainless. The face is checked flat and square to the shaft so impact compacts graft evenly rather than driving it to one side. Each batch passes Rockwell hardness testing, dimensional checks on face squareness to shaft, and visual inspection under our ISO 13485 system before passivation and final finishing. Mirror and satin finishes are both available — satin is usually specified where glare under operating lights is a concern.
Who Sources Bone Tamps From Surgical Star
Bone tamps sell to orthopedic, spinal and dental implant distributors as graduated sets, and are standard in bone grafting and arthroplasty trays.
OEM, Certification and Ordering
Every bone Tamps can be produced as a private-label line: your logo laser-marked on the shaft, your catalog numbers, and your own printed packaging, manufactured from your drawings or a reference sample. Our quality file is ISO 13485, our EU route is CE marking under MDR 2017/745, and our facility holds US FDA establishment registration. Conformity and ASTM F899 material certificates are issued against each order.
You order direct from the factory with no trading-house margin, on volume-tiered pricing and a minimum matched to your pattern and finish. Once your branded sample is signed off, expect roughly four to six weeks to bulk delivery, worldwide DDP. See how OEM & private label works →

Frequently Asked Questions
What are bone tamps used for?
Compacting bone graft into a defect and seating fragments or press-fit implants, driven by mallet blows.
Why does face squareness matter?
A face not square to the shaft drives the graft to one side rather than compacting it evenly into the defect.
What is a calibrated shaft for?
It gives a depth reference during impaction, so the surgeon knows how far the graft or implant has been driven.
Can you manufacture these under our own brand?
Yes — full OEM and private label. We laser-mark your logo and catalog numbers, pack in your branded boxes, and work from your drawings, tech pack or a reference sample, with a pre-production sample approved before any bulk run.
Send your pattern list, drawing or a reference sample and we’ll quote MOQ, pricing and lead time — standard catalog or fully private-label.
