A staple cannot simply be pulled out — its legs are bent under the skin. The remover slides its lower jaw beneath the staple bridge and squeezes, bending the staple back so both legs rotate up and out of the tissue simultaneously. Doing it properly is painless; doing it with the wrong instrument drags the legs sideways through the dermis.
Jaw geometry must match the staple profile so the bend happens at the right point on the bridge. A remover that grips too far forward or back deforms the staple without withdrawing the legs cleanly.
