Balfour Retractors — Pattern and Clinical Use
The Balfour holds a laparotomy open on its own. Two lateral blades mount on a rack-and-pinion bar that spreads the wound edges, and a third centre blade can be fitted to hold the bladder or lower viscera clear. It is the standard frame retractor for open abdominal surgery, replacing several pairs of assistant hands for the duration of the procedure.
