Lesion size varies within a single treatment session, and swapping instruments between lesions is inefficient. A double-ended curette gives the operator two ring sizes immediately — typically a small ring for defining the lesion edge and a larger one for clearing the body of it — without breaking sterility or reaching for a second instrument.
Both ends must be finished to the same standard, which is the common failure on double-ended instruments. The shaft must also balance so neither end feels awkward, since both are used equally.

Mirror and satin finishes are both available — satin is usually specified where glare under operating lights is a concern.
