Hudson Braces — Pattern and Clinical Use
The Hudson brace makes a burr hole by hand. A perforator is fitted in the chuck and cranked to penetrate the outer table, then swapped for a burr to enlarge the hole to the size needed for craniotome entry or drainage. Being entirely mechanical, it works when power is unavailable and gives direct tactile feedback as the drill approaches the inner table — which is precisely when control matters most.
The chuck must grip the burr securely and release it quickly, since the perforator-to-burr change happens mid-procedure. Crank bearing smoothness determines how much of the surgeon’s effort reaches the bone rather than being lost in the mechanism.

Material, Finish and Quality Control
We forge Hudson Braces from 316L austenitic stainless. Chuck grip and release are cycled, and crank bearings checked for smooth rotation so effort transfers to the bone rather than the mechanism. Each batch passes Rockwell hardness testing, dimensional checks on chuck retention and crank bearing smoothness, and visual inspection under our ISO 13485 system before passivation and final finishing. Mirror and satin finishes are both available — satin is usually specified where glare under operating lights is a concern.
