The loop’s defining application is LEEP or LLETZ, where a wire loop excises the cervical transformation zone in one pass, cutting and coagulating simultaneously so the specimen is removed and haemostasis achieved together. The same principle is used dermatologically for shave excision of raised lesions.
Loop dimensions are chosen to match the lesion — in cervical work, loop width and depth determine the size and depth of the excised cone, so accurate sizing is a clinical parameter, not a convenience. Wire gauge affects the thermal artefact left at the specimen margin.
